You are with us

The interactive installation “You are with us” connects the memory of long-deceased trans ancestors with the commemoration of recently deceased trans people. The interactive installation consists of two parts: In a coffin from which an abundance of plants grows, photos commemorate deceased trans people. On the former altar of the chapel, a collage commemorates trans people from early European history, to whom offerings are presented. In this dichotomy, we as today's trans people place ourselves in the tradition of a long but often forgotten history and thus gain a spiritual home.

On the occasion of the exhibition “Queer Lives, Queer Loss, Queer Mourning,” “You are with us” was created in the Kiezkapelle Berlin on the altar and the former laying-out room. The pictures of the deceased trans people are submissions from the trans community. Visitors to the site were invited to bring an offering to the trans ancestors on the altar or to integrate a memento or photo of a deceased trans person into the plant installation. Countless candles, pictures, flowers, and small artifacts found their way into the installation, which thus became a community project. More ancestors and offerings were added to the altar.

The exhibition was held to mark Trans Day of Remembrance, which is observed annually on November 20. On this day, the trans community commemorates all those who have been murdered as a result of transphobia. The exhibition “Queer Lives, Queer Loss, Queer Mourning” created a place of collective queer mourning where people could meet and remember together: an interactive exhibition on queer life, death, mourning, and remembrance.
