Crumbling Binaries - "What, if there were never just two sides?"

Participatory Performance, app. 2h, 2025
Collaboration with Mart Busche

Either/or, inside/outside, male/female: the apparent self-evidence of these opposites is anything but universal. It stems from a Eurocentric, colonial order that forced the world into manageable categories—people, animals, countries, bodies. “Crumbling Binaries” invites us to loosen this framework together.

Dan and Mart open up a play space between body, sound, and co-creation. Movement sequences, song, whispered stories, and crumbling materials invite you to let familiar categories crumble—binary genders, human/nature, stage/audience.

We do not put theories on a pedestal. Instead, we knead questions together: we may grind labels to dust, listen to “wandering” palm trees, and put ourselves on eye level with the grass, building collages of the future out of rice cakes and seed paper. How does non-binary thinking work and how can binary thought structures be crumbled? What can grow beyond either/or? A fragmentary collage that seeks answers to these questions in a participatory and visionary way, allowing viewers to actively participate in the decomposition of binaries.

Bring openness, comfortable clothing, and a desire to move. Everything else will emerge in the moment—together, imperfectly, curiously. No prior knowledge necessary, applause superfluous: we prefer to smash what breaks us.
