Abundance

Photographs, analogue, 2025
9x13cm prints as a collage of 2,50x2,50m
Room- and sound installation

Plants are the often forgotten losers of climate crisis: in the collage Abundance, Dan Dansen celebrates a diversity that we are losing bit by bit. The series immerses us in the world of plants and makes their beauty visually tangible. The photographs give us an understanding of plants as independent living beings with their own peculiarities: they turn the world into a family of choice.

The photographs were taken in analog form and have been largely exposed on expired film. This approach brings chance into the game of artistic design. The photographs were taken in both color and black and white. This artistic practice refers to the historical moment of the climate crisis, in which many plants are threatened with extinction. In addition, the experimental work with expired color film has immersed some of the pictures in red and purple tones. These pictures became an artistic metaphor for the particularly endangered species and attract the attention of viewers, inviting them to take a closer look. The series establishes an emotional connection to the plants and shows a diversity that could be history already tomorrow.

At Neon Kunst project space, the photographs are collaged with 532 small-format prints to create a 2.50 x 2.50 m picture. A spatial installation of plants and scents, as well as a sound installation with insect and forest sounds, creates a holistic experiential space that invites visitors to linger, reflect and relax. Just over a quarter of the pictures are black and white or in shades of red - roughly the same proportion as the plants that are on the Red List in Germany (28%). The small formats, installed on a large scale, render the abundance and richness of the plants visible: the sheer quantity of images is overwhelming. The small format of the individual pictures, on the other hand, creates an intimacy that brings the plants closer to us. The series encourages us to take a closer look and appreciate the diversity, abundance and resilience of plants. The pictures both create a space for celebrating biodiversity and mourning its loss.
